Sgt Corfe flew right through the battle of Britain and was shot down a couple of times, forced landed once and bailing out once, he survived these two incidents only to be later killed in the defence of Malta. I saw this old photograph of Sgt Corfe sitting in his Spitfire waiting to take off and decided to paint his portait. If you look closely, you can see the name Corfe written on his microphone, this to me was the symbol of another young fighter pilot who paid the supreme sacrifice in those far off days of 1940.
